Astrology has always kept interesting company.
Tarot arrives with a deck of richly illustrated cards. Numerology brings numbers. Feng Shui would like a quiet word about where you’ve put the sofa. Human Design comes with an intricate bodygraph, while an I Ching consultation begins with a very different sort of question about change.
Some of these practices have long histories. Others are comparatively recent, even when their language sounds ancient. And while they can sit comfortably alongside astrology in a practitioner’s work, they are not simply different kinds of astrology.
So why might an astrologer offer them? Perhaps a Tarot spread helps someone reflect on a decision alongside a birth-chart consultation. Perhaps coaching gives a client more time to explore what to do with an insight. Or perhaps the practitioner has trained in another tradition entirely and offers a separate service.
The useful question isn’t whether one method is universally better. It’s what the practitioner actually does, what assumptions the method makes and whether that experience suits you.
Carl Jung’s interest in symbols and archetypes offers one way of understanding the appeal of some of these practices: stories and images can prompt reflection about conflicts, hopes and patterns we have difficulty putting into words. That does not establish that cards can foretell events, that unseen energies have been measured or that past lives can be recovered as historical memories.
This guide explains the fifteen named complementary practices available in the Good Astrologers directory. Beneath each practice you’ll find cards for published astrologers who list it on their profile. Those selections are practitioner-reported, not separate endorsements or certifications.
How do complementary practices differ from astrology?
Astrology interprets a chart or another astrological configuration according to a particular tradition or technique. A Tarot reading uses cards. Numerology works with numerical correspondences. Coaching is a structured conversation about aims, obstacles and action. Reiki and other energy-healing practices draw on different beliefs and methods altogether.
They can overlap in a practitioner’s work without becoming interchangeable. A person who practises psychological astrology may also read Tarot; someone who practises Jyotish may also offer Vastu consultations. Neither combination tells you automatically how the session will unfold.
It helps to ask whether you’re booking one integrated consultation or two separate services, what training the practitioner has in each method and whether you can choose what is included. Our guide to choosing the right astrologer explains the wider questions to consider.
Tarot
Tarot readings typically use a deck of 78 cards, divided into the Major and Minor Arcana, although traditions and decks vary. A reader lays out cards in a spread and interprets the images, positions and relationships between them in response to a question or situation.
Some people approach Tarot as divination. Others use it more reflectively, as a way to explore feelings, possibilities and choices. The Fool, the Hermit and the Empress can be understood as recognisable characters in the human drama – enthusiasm, solitude, nurturing and the occasional decision to set off without fully reading the instructions.
There are natural parallels with archetypal astrology, but Tarot is not a birth-chart technique. Ask whether the astrologer offers a standalone Tarot consultation or incorporates cards into their astrology readings. And remember that a compelling symbol is an invitation to think, not proof of what another person feels or what tomorrow must bring.

Human Design
Human Design is a modern system developed by Ra Uru Hu in the late twentieth century. It combines elements drawn from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system, Kabbalah and other frameworks into a distinctive chart commonly called a bodygraph.
A Human Design reading may involve terms such as type, strategy, authority, profile and centres. Practitioners use these concepts to discuss decision-making, energy and personal tendencies. Its elaborate diagrams can look reassuringly technical, but the system’s claims have not been established by scientific evidence.
Unlike a conventional astrological birth chart, a Human Design bodygraph follows its own interpretive rules. If an astrologer offers both, ask how they distinguish the two systems and whether their advice is presented as a personal reflection or a rule you are expected to obey. Your life should not require a permission slip from a diagram.

Numerology
Numerology interprets numbers as carrying symbolic significance. In popular contemporary forms, a practitioner may calculate numbers from a person’s birth date or name and discuss themes associated with those results. Systems differ, and modern numerology should not be assumed to be one unbroken tradition handed down from Pythagoras.
Numerology and astrology share an interest in patterns, cycles and symbolic correspondences, but their starting points are different. Numerology begins with calculations and numerical meanings; astrology begins with the sky, charts and established astrological methods.
A numerology consultation might appeal to someone who enjoys symbolic reflection but doesn’t want an entire birth-chart reading. Ask what calculation system is being used, what it is intended to illuminate and how much interpretation depends on the practitioner’s judgement. Numbers can be wonderfully orderly. People, regrettably, tend not to be.

Coaching
Coaching is a broad term for structured conversations intended to help someone clarify aims, examine obstacles and consider practical steps. Depending on the practitioner’s training and speciality, it might involve career questions, confidence, relationships or personal development.
An astrologer who also coaches might use a chart to begin a discussion, then focus on the client’s choices and next actions. Another may offer coaching entirely separately from astrology. This is where a useful distinction emerges: symbolism can stimulate reflection, while coaching is concerned with what someone wants to do.
Coaching is not automatically psychotherapy, counselling or medical care, and titles and training standards vary by location. Ask about qualifications, confidentiality, the intended format and professional boundaries. A good session should leave you with more ownership of your decisions, not a new dependency on the person helping you make them.

Reiki
Reiki originated in Japan in the early twentieth century and is associated with Mikao Usui. A session commonly involves a practitioner placing their hands lightly on, or just above, parts of the body as part of an energy-based spiritual or wellbeing practice. Approaches and traditions vary.
Some people describe Reiki sessions as calming or personally meaningful. That experience should be distinguished from claims of medical effectiveness: Reiki has not been shown to treat or cure diseases, and the proposed healing-energy mechanism is not supported by scientific evidence.
An astrologer may offer Reiki as a separate relaxation-oriented session or as part of a wider spiritual practice. Check what a session involves, whether touch is used, how consent is handled and what claims are being made. Reiki should never replace diagnosis, treatment or advice from a qualified healthcare professional. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health provides an evidence-based overview.

Energy healing
Energy healing is an umbrella term for practices based on the belief that an individual’s wellbeing is connected with a subtle energy field, life force or energetic balance. Different practitioners use different language and methods, and there is no single agreed definition.
Some work with chakras, others with visualisation, breathwork, meditation or hands-on techniques. Reiki is one particular tradition within this wider landscape, but not every energy-healing practitioner practises Reiki.
For someone interested in spiritual astrology, the appeal may lie in a shared vocabulary of connection, balance and inner experience. An astrologer might use a chart to explore a period of personal change, then offer a separate energy-healing session intended to support relaxation or reflection.
That doesn’t mean an astrological chart can diagnose an energy imbalance, or that an unseen energy field has been scientifically demonstrated. Claims that energy healing can treat illness require evidence that such practices have not established.
If you’re considering a session, ask what will actually happen. Will there be touch? Meditation? Conversation? Are you expected to adopt a particular spiritual belief? And does the practitioner respect your comfort and boundaries?
Mystery may be welcome. Informed consent should not be mysterious.

Psychic and intuitive readings
A psychic reading generally involves a practitioner claiming to receive information through perception beyond the ordinary senses. An intuitive reading is a broader description, sometimes used for interpretations based on impressions, feelings or symbolic associations.
The two labels overlap, but they don’t necessarily mean the same thing. One practitioner may claim clairvoyance, while another describes their work as intuitive because they pay attention to patterns, imagery and the client’s circumstances.
An astrologer might offer a conventional chart consultation alongside a separate intuitive reading. Another may interpret a birth chart while drawing on what they describe as psychic impressions.
It’s worth asking where the astrology ends and the intuition begins. That distinction matters if you’re expecting an interpretation based on astrological techniques rather than information the practitioner believes they have received through another channel.
The Greek myth of Cassandra is an interesting companion to this subject. Granted the ability to prophesy but cursed never to be believed, she reminds us how complicated the relationship between prediction, certainty and trust can become.
A responsible practitioner should welcome questions, acknowledge uncertainty and avoid frightening claims about illness, death, relationships or unavoidable events.
Nobody should leave a reading feeling that their future has been confiscated.

Mediumship
Mediumship is the practice of claiming to communicate with people who have died, or with spirits understood to exist beyond ordinary physical experience.
Some mediumship readings focus on messages, personal details or expressions of reassurance. Others take place within particular spiritualist or religious traditions. Beliefs and approaches vary considerably.
Mediumship differs from astrology. An astrologer interprets astrological symbolism; a medium claims to communicate with an unseen presence. A practitioner who offers both should explain whether these are separate consultations.
The ancient story of Orpheus descending into the underworld captures something of the longing that can surround grief – the wish to reach someone who is no longer physically present. It is a powerful story precisely because loss doesn’t respond neatly to reason.
That emotional vulnerability also makes professional responsibility especially important.
There is no reliable scientific evidence establishing communication with the dead. If you’re considering a mediumship reading, look for someone who does not exploit grief, promise guaranteed contact or pressure you into further paid sessions.
A consultation should never make you feel guilty for questioning a message or for choosing not to return.

Akashic Records
The Akashic Records are described in some modern esoteric traditions as a spiritual repository of knowledge about souls, experiences and events. The concept developed through particular nineteenth- and twentieth-century spiritual movements, drawing on the Sanskrit word akasha, which has a different and older history in Indian philosophy.
An Akashic Records reading commonly involves a practitioner claiming to access information about a person’s spiritual journey, recurring patterns, relationships or soul development.
Some astrologers offer this alongside evolutionary astrology, especially where their work explores karma, reincarnation or the language of soul growth.
There may be a symbolic resemblance between these approaches, but they are not interchangeable. An evolutionary astrologer may interpret Pluto and the lunar nodes through an astrological framework; an Akashic Records practitioner uses a different set of spiritual assumptions.
The idea of a cosmic library is undeniably appealing. Imagine being able to consult the universe’s filing system, preferably without having to remember yet another password.
But the existence of such records, and the ability to retrieve factual information from them, has not been scientifically established.
Ask whether the practitioner understands the reading as symbolic, intuitive or literally revelatory. You remain free to accept, question or disregard any interpretation.

Oracle cards
Oracle card readings use illustrated cards associated with symbols, messages, themes or questions. Unlike Tarot, which usually follows a recognisable structure of Major and Minor Arcana, oracle decks can vary enormously in their number of cards, imagery and interpretive systems.
One deck might focus on mythology. Another might use animals, archetypes, affirmations or spiritual themes. The meanings are usually determined by the deck’s creator, the accompanying guidebook and the reader’s interpretation.
This flexibility can make oracle cards approachable for someone interested in reflection rather than learning a detailed traditional system.
An astrologer may draw an oracle card at the beginning or end of a consultation as a conversational prompt. Others offer a standalone reading.
From a Jungian perspective, the interesting aspect is often the relationship between an image and the associations it evokes. A symbol can prompt someone to notice a feeling or question they hadn’t previously articulated.
But that is different from establishing that the card was supernaturally selected to deliver a factual message.
If you enjoy the unexpected ways an image can change a conversation, oracle cards may be interesting. Ask which deck the practitioner uses and how it fits into their consultation.

I Ching
The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is a foundational text of Chinese thought with a long history of philosophical, cosmological and divinatory interpretation.
A consultation traditionally involves generating one of 64 hexagrams – figures made from six broken or unbroken lines – often using coins or yarrow stalks. The resulting hexagram is interpreted through the text and its commentarial traditions.
Change is central to the I Ching. Rather than presenting life as a series of permanent states, it encourages attention to circumstances, transitions and the relationship between action and timing.
There are resonances with astrology’s interest in cycles, but the I Ching is an independent tradition with its own intellectual and cultural history.
An astrologer who also uses the I Ching may offer it as a separate form of divination or incorporate its symbolism into a wider discussion.
If you’re considering a consultation, ask about the practitioner’s training, the interpretive tradition they follow and how they approach your question.
The I Ching can invite patience and reflection about changing circumstances – qualities that are rarely unwelcome when you’re deciding whether to send that text message.

Palmistry
Palmistry, also called palm reading or chiromancy, interprets features of the hands, including lines, shapes and proportions, according to different traditional systems.
Practices associated with palm reading have appeared in several cultures. Modern readers may discuss character, tendencies, relationships or possible future developments, although the meanings assigned to hand features vary.
Palmistry and astrology have sometimes been combined in historical esoteric traditions. For example, particular areas of the hand may be associated symbolically with planets such as Venus, Jupiter or Saturn.
Those associations do not mean that the hand can provide a scientifically validated account of someone’s personality or future.
A palmistry consultation may involve looking at one or both hands, discussing recognised lines and mounts, and interpreting their traditional meanings.
If an astrologer offers palmistry, ask whether it forms part of a combined reading or is booked separately.
And while the language of the ‘life line’ can sound rather dramatic, no responsible practitioner should claim to know the date of your death by examining your palm.

Its historical foundations, cultural context and methods differ from those of Feng Shui, even though both are sometimes described broadly as approaches to harmonious spaces.
Contemporary Vastu consultants may discuss a building’s layout, entrances, rooms, directional orientation and the intended use of different areas.
Some practitioners combine Vastu with Jyotish, or Vedic astrology, because particular schools understand both within broader Indian cosmological frameworks.
If an astrologer offers Vastu, clarify whether the consultation involves general advice, reviewing plans or visiting a property. Ask what recommendations might cost to implement and whether they require structural changes.
A useful spatial consultation should make its practical implications clear. It should not present expensive alterations as guarantees of wealth, health or relationship success.
A room can influence how we feel and function. Whether a particular arrangement changes our destiny is a separate claim.

Feng Shui
Feng Shui is a Chinese tradition concerned with the relationship between people and their surroundings. Different schools consider factors such as landscape, orientation, spatial configuration and systems of symbolic correspondence.
Some contemporary approaches use objects, colours or the bagua as interpretive tools. Others focus more strongly on compass measurements, buildings and environmental relationships.
Feng Shui and Vastu have different histories and methods. Neither should be reduced to a universal rule about which corner of your living room deserves a houseplant.
An astrologer who offers Feng Shui may have trained in a separate Chinese metaphysical tradition, or may provide spatial consultations alongside astrological readings.
Ask which school they practise, whether they need property information or a site visit, and what changes they might recommend.
It’s perfectly reasonable to value a calmer, more thoughtfully arranged home. Claims that a particular arrangement guarantees financial prosperity or cures illness, however, should be approached critically.
Sometimes moving a chair really does improve your afternoon. It needn’t be because Mercury has taken an interest in your upholstery.

Past-life regression
Past-life regression generally involves guided imagery, relaxation or hypnosis intended to explore experiences that a participant or practitioner may interpret as memories of previous lives.
Some people approach these sessions within a literal belief in reincarnation. Others understand the imagery as imaginative, symbolic or psychologically meaningful.
In certain forms of evolutionary or spiritual astrology, past-life themes are also discussed through astrological symbolism. But a regression session and a birth-chart reading are very different experiences.
The myth of Persephone’s descent and return offers a powerful metaphor for transformation: a journey into unfamiliar territory followed by a return to ordinary life, changed by what has been encountered.
That doesn’t mean a vivid inner narrative establishes that a historical past life occurred.
Hypnosis and suggestion can influence memory, and detailed experiences arising during regression should not be treated as reliable historical evidence. There is a risk of creating or reinforcing false memories.
Before booking, ask about the practitioner’s training, methods, safeguarding arrangements and how they respond if distressing material arises.
Regression should not be represented as a proven treatment for trauma, mental illness or physical disease. Anyone seeking treatment for a health condition should consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
A meaningful symbolic story can remain meaningful without being mistaken for a verified biography.

How can I choose an astrologer who offers complementary practices?
The starting point is not necessarily the practice that sounds most mysterious, impressive or promising.
It’s what you want from the experience.
Perhaps you’re interested in the symbolic possibilities of a Tarot reading. Perhaps you want practical support with a decision and are considering coaching. Or you might be curious about how an astrologer integrates different traditions.
Before booking, consider a few practical questions:
- What exactly is being offered? Is this a dedicated session or one element of an astrology reading?
- What experience or training does the practitioner have? Ask about the specific practice, not just their astrology background.
- What will happen during the consultation? Clarify the format, duration, fees and whether any physical contact is involved.
- What claims are being made? Be cautious of guaranteed predictions, diagnoses, miracle cures or promises of certain outcomes.
- Are your beliefs and boundaries respected? You should be able to question an interpretation, decline an exercise or end a consultation without pressure.
- What happens if difficult emotions arise? Particularly for regression and mediumship, ask about appropriate support and safeguards.
Our professional standards explain the principles we expect practitioners to observe, and our guide to choosing an astrologer offers more advice on comparing profiles.
A directory listing tells you what a practitioner has chosen to describe about their work. It is not an independent certification in every practice they offer.
The right practitioner should help you understand your choices, not persuade you that you have no choice.
Frequently asked questions
Are Tarot and astrology the same thing?
No. Tarot uses a symbolic card system, while astrology interprets charts and astrological configurations. Some practitioners offer both, and there can be similarities in their use of symbols, but they are different practices.
Can I book astrology and another practice in the same consultation?
Sometimes. Some astrologers incorporate another method into their readings; others provide separate appointments. Check the practitioner’s profile and ask what is included before booking.
Is Human Design a type of astrology?
Human Design incorporates elements drawn from astrology, but it is a distinct modern system with its own chart and interpretive framework. It should not be confused with a conventional astrology reading.
What is the difference between Tarot and oracle cards?
Tarot usually follows a recognised deck structure, commonly with 78 cards. Oracle decks vary in size, symbolism and interpretation. Both may be used for divination or reflection, depending on the reader’s approach.
Are complementary practices scientifically proven?
These practices make different kinds of claims, so there is no single answer. Symbolic interpretation, coaching, relaxation practices and claims of supernatural knowledge are not the same thing. Experiences of personal meaning do not, by themselves, establish that predictions, spiritual mechanisms or medical claims are scientifically supported.

Beyond the method – finding someone who suits you
There is something very human about wanting another perspective.
We look for patterns in the sky, stories in cards, meaning in numbers and sometimes reassurance that an uncertain moment won’t last forever.
Jung understood that images and stories can open conversations with parts of ourselves that don’t always speak in ordinary sentences. Mythology offers another way of exploring the same territory – full of complicated characters who rarely follow the sensible advice they receive.
But whatever method appeals to you, the person offering it matters.
Curiosity is valuable. So are discernment, professional boundaries, humility and the ability to say, I don’t know.
Explore the international astrologer directory, compare practitioners and choose someone whose experience and approach fit what you’re looking for.
The universe may be full of mysteries. Booking a consultation shouldn’t have to be one.
