You check your astrology app and discover that Saturn is transiting your Moon.

This sounds important.

Possibly ominous.

At the very least, it sounds like Saturn has found your home address.

In reality, astrology transits are one of the most widely used techniques for exploring timing and change.

A transit describes the position of a planet at a particular moment. In a personal astrology reading, an astrologer usually compares those current planetary positions with the positions in your birth chart.

This allows them to explore which parts of your natal chart are being activated at a particular time.

A transit may coincide with a period when relationships, work, confidence, responsibility, identity or some other area of life feels unusually prominent.

That does not mean the planet is dictating a particular event.

A transit is better understood as an astrological timing technique – a way of examining the themes associated with a period rather than treating your future as a timetable already printed somewhere in the heavens.

What is a transit in astrology?

An astrological transit occurs as a planet moving through the zodiac forms a relationship with something in an astrological chart.

For a personal transit reading, that chart is usually your natal chart.

Suppose your natal Venus is at 15 degrees of Taurus.

At some point, another planet moving through the sky may reach 15 degrees of Taurus, Scorpio, Leo or Aquarius.

An astrologer may consider the aspect formed between that transiting planet and your natal Venus and ask what themes it might describe.

The principle is fairly simple:

Your birth chart stays fixed. The planets continue moving. Transits describe the changing relationship between the two.

The natal chart provides the underlying map.

How do astrology transits work?

The mythology of Pluto – or Hades – gives astrologers an obvious language of descent and transformation.

Again, the planet matters.
