Choosing an astrologer can be surprisingly personal. You might know exactly what you want to explore – a relationship, a career change or a particular decision – or you might simply have a feeling that you’d like a different perspective on where you are in life.
It helps to understand that astrologers don’t all work in the same way. They may work within different traditions, use different techniques or bring different interpretive approaches to a reading.
The useful place to start isn’t necessarily with a particular type of astrology. It’s with what you’d like to explore.
What is an astrology reading?
An astrology reading is a consultation with an astrologer who interprets astrological information to help you explore particular questions, patterns or periods of your life.
The kind of reading you have will depend on what you want to explore and how the astrologer works. Some readings focus on your birth chart, while others may explore relationships, career, timing, decisions or specific questions.

You don’t need to have one perfectly defined question. Several areas of life can overlap, and a good consultation can explore more than one of them.
Understand the different branches of astrology
A branch describes a recognised area of astrological work. Good Astrologers currently uses four main branches.
Natal astrology
Natal astrology works with the birth chart and can be used to explore personality, patterns, relationships, strengths, challenges and potential.
Horary astrology
Horary astrology explores a specific question through a chart cast for the moment the question is asked.
Electional astrology
Electional astrology is concerned with choosing potentially favourable times to begin important events, decisions or undertakings.
Mundane astrology
Mundane astrology applies astrological analysis to collective subjects such as countries, political events, social developments and wider historical periods.
Questions about relationships, career or future timing can draw on one or more branches and techniques. They are not separate branches simply because they describe a common reason for seeking a reading.
For example, relationship astrology, career astrology and predictive astrology are useful ways of describing particular reading interests and areas of expertise.
Explore different astrology traditions
A tradition describes a broader astrological system, lineage or historical framework within which an astrologer works.
Western astrology
Western astrology encompasses a broad range of historical and modern astrological work.
Jyotish (Vedic astrology)
Jyotish, often called Vedic astrology, has its own systems, terminology and techniques and encompasses several distinct schools and lineages.
Chinese astrology
Chinese astrology includes several distinct systems and methods, including traditions associated with BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu.
Hellenistic astrology
Hellenistic astrology draws on astrological texts and techniques that developed around the Mediterranean world during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Medieval astrology
Medieval astrology draws on traditions and techniques developed and transmitted through medieval Arabic, Persian and European astrology.
Astrologers may also work within other traditions. Good Astrologers allows practitioners to describe their professional work where the available categories do not represent it accurately.
Consider the astrologer’s approach
An astrologer’s approach describes the interpretive philosophy or orientation they bring to their work.
At Good Astrologers, the main approaches are:

- Archetypal
- Spiritual
- Divinatory
These aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Two astrologers may use similar charts and techniques while interpreting them in quite different ways.
The approach can therefore be just as important as the technical method when deciding whether an astrologer feels right for you.
What techniques might an astrologer use?
Techniques are specific methods an astrologer may use when interpreting a chart, answering a question or exploring timing.
Examples include:
- Transits
- Secondary progressions
- Solar returns
- Synastry
- Composite charts
- Annual profections
- Solar arc directions
- Astrocartography
Different traditions also have their own techniques and terminology.
You don’t need to understand these methods before booking a reading. They’re part of the astrologer’s toolkit, not homework for the client.
How does it all fit together?
The different parts of an astrologer’s work can overlap. A person’s question doesn’t automatically determine one particular branch, tradition, approach or technique.
For example, someone asking about a career change might choose a natal astrologer to explore their broader strengths and direction. Another person with the same Life question might prefer an astrologer who combines natal astrology with predictive techniques to explore timing.
Someone asking about a relationship might choose a practitioner who works with synastry. Someone trying to choose a favourable date for an important event might look for an astrologer experienced in electional astrology.
This is why we don’t reduce an astrologer to a single speciality. Their professional work can be understood through several complementary dimensions.
How to choose an astrologer
Once you know a little more about the different ways astrologers work, you can start looking at individual practitioners.
- Start with your question. Think about what you genuinely want to explore.
- Look at their approach. Different interpretive styles can produce very different kinds of conversations.
- Consider their tradition. If a particular astrological tradition interests you, look for someone who works within it.
- Look at their experience and training. Consider qualifications, professional background and relevant experience.
- Consider the consultation itself. Check whether they offer online or in-person readings and whether their way of working suits you.
- Look at available trust signals. Verification, reviews, professional associations and published work can all provide useful context.
